Other things you should know:

We still need volunteers to bring PSWIRL to the attention of liberal churches and congregations in Southern California, Arizona and Southern Nevada, by handing out fliers, putting up posters and making announcements. Please contact Richard Boothe, madlibrarian9@hotmail.com if you are willing to help, including your name, your contact information and your religious organization.

Leslie Levy, on the Publicity Committee, plans to represent PSWIRL at UU Assemblies, such as the next District and General Assemblies, possibly in conjunction with Camp deBenneville Pine’s booth. Leslie needs volunteers to help her. If you plan to attend these Assemblies and can assist her, please contact Leslie (see our roster).

Minutes, PSWIRL Planning Committee Meeting, Long Beach Unitarian Universalist Church, September 18, 2005

Attending: Genie Nakano and Hideki Obayashi, Liz Ellenberger, Peter Landecker and Lenore Snodey, Manon and Lee McGee, Justin Bell, Cliff Cole and Evelyn Folkins, Barbara Reinhart, Marcia Taylor, Betsy Walters, Shirley Ussery and Suzie Simon, Ron Goggia, Richard Boothe.

The 2006 theme speaker was discussed. Taylor suggested a minister named Jon Dobrer, the only suggested candidate who has agreed to be our theme speaker. He has proposed 5 topics:

1) Great Religious Trials of History

2) Great thinkers of the 19th century

3) Hebrew Gospels and the Koran / Islam in the Middle East

4) God and Statecraft

5) Fundamental Problems of Fundamentalists.

Theme Speaker Committee members reported that David H. Levy and Michael Dowd declined the invitation due to insufficient remuneration for their time. Another possible name mentioned was Ellen Livingston. The issue of more money for the theme speaker in order to attract a new association and mix of interested people was discussed and tabled until the next meeting. The theme speaker committee - (Betsy, Marsha Taylor, Peter and Lenore) - agreed to visit various churches to hear other ministers/speakers, including John Dobrer, with a definitive decision postponed until next meeting.

Officers elected:

President: Richard Boothe

Vice President: Manon Washburn

Treasurer: Ron Goggia

Database/Mail Secretary: Ken Ellenberger

Recording Secretary (as available): Leslie Levy

Dean: Nancy Ann Leader

Workshop Coordinator: Laurel Mann (with the proviso that one planning committee meeting will be held in Lancaster)

Registrar: Marcia Taylor

Treasurer Ron Goggia submitted the Treasurer's report, which was found to contain errors. Ron agreed to submit a revised report at the next meeting.

A lively but inconclusive discussion of the 2006 camp name change was held. Richard Boothe read from a list of emailed name suggestions, including Phoenix Rising and Chalice Camp. Barbara Reinhart suggested merely changing the pronunciation of "PSWIRL" to "SWIRL" (silent "P"), which would suggest sophistication and relevance while honoring the organization’s founders and history, seconded by Leslie Levy. Levy suggested calling the camp "Adult Mountain Retreat" in any announcements or advertising that need to describe succinctly the nature of our camp, seconded by Steve Shirley. Lee McGee moved to table the discussion until the next meeting, which passed.

Discussion was held on a PSWIRL fundraising party. It is the sense of the committee that raising funds for Hurricane Katrina victims is beyond the scope of this fundraising effort. Two venues were suggested:  1) Hold the party at Hideki Obayashi and Genie Nakano's bowling alley / bar& grill in Gardena; 2) Rent the social hall of a U/U Church. Moved, seconded and passed to table the discussion until the next meeting.

Moved, seconded and passed to table the camp cost discussion until the next meeting, when a revised treasurer's report would be submitted.

Respectfully submitted,

Leslie Levy, recording secretary
